Personalities of the stage, television and film scenes came together Tuesday to celebrate the life of acting legend Angela Lansbury, who died Tuesday. The beloved “Murder, She Wrote” and five-time Tony Award winner died “peacefully in her sleep” at her home in Los Angeles. She was 96.
Lansbury, who was most widely known for her work as literary sleuth Jessica Fletcher in “Murder, She Wrote,” had a career that spanned decades and mediums — from the films “Gaslight” and “The Picture of Dorian Gray” in the 1940s to the 2009 Broadway revival of “Blithe Spirit.”

Several loud explosions rocked the center of the Ukrainian capital Monday morning, a week after Russia orchestrated a massive coordinated air strike across the country. Kyiv city mayor Vitaliy Klichko said the central Shevchenko district of the capital had been hit, and urged residents to take shelter. No further details were immediately known. The explosions came from the same central Kyiv district where a week ago a missile struck a children’s playground and intersection near the Kyiv National University’s main buildings. Social media posts showed a fire in the area of the apparent strike, with black smoke rising into the early morning light.

A California ballot measure that would tax the rich to pay for electric vehicle programs has divided Democrats. Gov. Gavin Newsom is against Proposition 30, which would boost taxes for people making more than $2 million. He says its a giveaway for rideshare company Lyft, which is the primary funder of the initiative. Lyft and other rideshare companies must ensure all their car trips are zero-emission by 2030. But backers of the measure include the California Democratic Party and numerous environmental groups. They say the state needs a lot more money to speed the transition to electric cars and lower planet-warming emissions.
An official has warned that 34,000 homes could be inundated or isolated in Victoria state as a flood emergency continues across parts of Australia’s southeast. Victoria is the worst-affected state with some towns experiencing the highest river peaks in decades. The states of New South Wales and Tasmania were also experiencing flooding in an emergency that began last week. Federal Emergency Management Minister Murray Watt said Monday that Victoria faces “some serious flooding” with more rain forecast for late this week. In the past week, two people have drowned and two were reported missing in Victoria and New South Wales.

The nation's first trial over a state's ban on gender-confirming care for children begins in Arkansas this week. U.S. District Judge Jay Moody will hear testimony and evidence starting Monday over the law he blocked prohibiting such care for anyone under 18 years old. The trial is expected to last two weeks and is the latest fight over transgender youth restrictions. Arkansas' attorneys argue the ban is part of the state's authority to regulate medical practices. Families of transgender youth and multiple medical organizations have criticized the ban. Arkansas became the first state to enact such a ban last year.
Asian shares are mostly lower as investors focus on the weeklong Communist Party congress in China. Benchmarks dropped in Tokyo, Sydney, Seoul, Hong Kong and Shanghai in early trading. The meeting in China, which opened Sunday, is expected to reappoint Xi Jinping as leader for the next five years, reaffirming his grip on power and stronger state control over the economy. Analyst expect no change to the “zero-COVID policy.” Stocks ended last week broadly lower on Wall Street. A report showing U.S. consumers' expectations for inflation have provided another signal that the Federal Reserve may keep aggressively raising interest rates.
