Lark Mason Associates – Works By Thomas Rowlandson Online Auction September 6–28, 2022 227 E. 120th St, New York, NY www.iGAVELAUCTIONS.com Niki@larkmasonassociates.com 212-289-5524

NEW YORK CITY — Originally scheduled to take place last February, Lark Mason Associates announced that the works by Thomas Rowlandson (British, 1756-1827) from an American collector will open for bidding on iGavelAuctions starting September 6 through September 28. More than 300 drawings, prints and books by Rowlandson comprise 70 lots. Rowlandson is celebrated for ushering in the golden age of British caricature art at the turn of the Nineteenth Century. Rowlandson produced many sardonic illustrations in ink and watercolor that skewered powerful political figures such as the Duchess of Devonshire, William Pitt the Younger and Napoleon Bonaparte and depicted contemporary events in a humorous robust and bawdy style. Rowlandson’s drawings of life in Georgian England exposed human foibles and vanity with sympathy and rollicking humor, and he achieved success selling these prints and watercolors to wealthy collectors. However, for much of his life he was an inveterate gambler and had to produce a flood of his comic prints to stay ahead of financial losses. Among the highlights are “True Love, Older Man with a Younger Lady,” watercolor and ink on paper ($10/15,000); “Miseries of Travelling,” watercolor and ink on paper ($10/15,000); “Robbers Surrounding Mother and Child,” pen and paper, and two related etchings ($4/6,000); Caricature Magazine , hand-colored etchings bound in original brown printed cover ($1,5/2,500); and six hand-colored etchings in miseries series ($300/500). “We are delighted to offer this recently discovered cache of satiric drawing and prints by the renowned British caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson,” said Lark Mason. “Underscoring the adage ‘the more things change, the more they stay the same,’ Rowlandson’s drawings reflect many of the same issues we confront today — whether it’s sitting through a long boring dinner, observing an older gentleman with a younger woman or dealing with overcrowded public transportation. According to Mason, the sale was delayed at the last minute because of some issues with the artist’s estate. The prints and drawings will be on view, by appointment only, at Lark Mason Associates, 229 East 127th Street, Monday through Friday, 10 am to 5 pm. A Tiffany jeweled Dragonfly lamp with 14-inch shade ($30/50,000) will also be offered ($30/50,000). Finishing off the Tiffany is a documented leaded glass Romanesque ornamental window, circa 1890, from a private Chicago collection, at 8 feet 5 inches by 4 feet 9½ inches ($50/80,000); an attributed suite of mahogany and leaded glass wisteria trellis doors, circa 1920 ($75/125,000); and three Moorish filigree screens, attributed to Louis C. The Twentieth Century design, paintings and prints will include an Alexander Calder (American, 1898-1976) gouache on paper titled “The Beams,” from Perls Galleries New York, acquired by a private collection in New York in 1966 ($40/60,000); and a cloud-form stacked and laminated walnut sideboard made in 1979 by Wendell Castle (American, 1932-2018) from the estate of Esther Germanow in Pittsford, N.Y. Soulis Early Fall Gallery Auction September 23 Lone Jack / Kansas City, Missouri www.SoulisAuctions.com 816-697-3830

LONE JACK, MO. — A Met-exhibited artwork by the influential German Secessionist painter Franz von Stuck (né Franz Stuck, 1863-1928) has been rediscovered after being out of public sight for more than a century. Titled “Lauschende Faune” (Listening Fauns), the circa 1899 oil on panel with a distinguished history of museum exhibition is now known to have spent the last 60 years in a Kansas City residence. There, it was displayed by two consecutive generations of the same family, who were unaware of its background or true value. Soulis Auctions has been selected to sell the painting, without reserve, on the family’s behalf. It will be offered in a September 23 gallery auction, with all forms of remote bidding available. Until now,” Lauschende Faune,” whose alternative title is “Belauscht” (translation: “overheard” or “eavesdropped on”), had been documented in black and white only, first appearing in the German art journal Die Kunst in 1904. In 1909 it was depicted in The International Studio – An Illustrated Magazine of Fine and Applied Art as part of a nine-page article by Christian Briton titled “The Collection of Hugo Reisinger: German and American Pictures.” Also in 1909, the painting was exhibited for seven weeks at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Remains of the label from that exhibition remain on verso. The exhibition’s catalog identified it as being the property of Hugo Reisinger, a banker, businessman and prominent art collector who was married to the daughter of St Louis, Mo., brewery baron Adolphus Busch. Reisinger was also a member of the Met’s board of directors at the time. Later that year, “Lauschende Faune” was exhibited at both the Chicago Institute of Art and the Copley Society in Boston; but after that its next known museum appearance was not until 1919, when it was displayed at Dallas Art Association’s “First Annual Exhibition: Contemporary International Art.” “The ten-year hiatus was almost certainly attributable to the unfortunate effect World War I had on German art in general,” said Dirk Soulis, owner of Soulis Auctions. “There can be no other explanation, because in 1909, Stuck was at the pinnacle of his career. He was famous as the cofounder of the Munich Secession, had won a Gold Medal at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris, and had even been awarded the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown in 1906. He was also in demand as a teacher, with students like Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky and Josef Albers. But even years after the First World War ended, German art remained unfashionable and never had time to recover because of Germany’s aggressive role in World War II.” The Art Loss Registry has been instrumental in tracing the early years of “Lauschende Faune’s” ownership, starting with Galerie Heinemann, Stuck’s primary representative, which received it on August 9, 1899. The gallery sold the painting five days later to Hugo Reisinger, who is known to have been its owner until at least 1908. The next change in ownership was noted in the catalog for the aforementioned 1919 museum exhibition in Dallas, where the owner was shown as Edward A. Faust, a prominent St Louis restauranteur who was connected to Adolphus Busch by marriage. “And that is where the trail ran cold,” said Soulis. “For the next 100 years, the painting was neither exhibited nor published. No one knew where the painting was located or who owned it until 2021, when it was rediscovered in the Kansas City mansion of the late Colonel and Mrs S.D. Slaughter.” The Stuck painting was found together with a large British equestrian artwork which had documentation showing the Slaughters had purchased it in St Louis in 1964. No receipt for the Stuck was found, however the Slaughters’ grandsons, who jointly own the painting, have confirmed its existence in their grandparents’ home beginning sometime in the 1960s. The 36½-by-33½-inch painting is presented in its original gilt frame custom-crafted by Hans Irlbacher of Munich, with the atelier’s label on verso. “The next owner may choose to have the painting professionally cleaned, which would reveal the image as seen in the photograph that appeared in the 1904 edition of Die Kunst . We decided to leave the painting untouched so the winning bidder can decide if and where they wish to have it restored.” “Lauschende Faune” (Listening Fauns) will be offered without reserve at Soulis Auctions’ gallery in Lone Jack. The estimate is $75/125,000, and the minimum opening bid is $50,000. All forms of remote bidding will be available, including absentee, phone and live via the internet. Soulis Auctions is at 529 West Lone Jack Lee’s Summit Road. For additional information, www.soulisauctions.com or 816-697-3830.
