Sciaky, Inc., a subsidiary of Phillips Service Industries, Inc. and a leading provider of metal additive manufacturing solutions, announced that President Biden was introduced to its Electron Beam Additive Manufacturing (EBAM®) technology during an AM Forward address at United Performance Metals in Hamilton, Ohio on May 6, 2022.

President Biden discussed how Congress can support innovations like Additive Manufacturing to improve America’s small and medium-sized manufacturers, create high-paying jobs, and improve supply chain efficiency during his speech.

President Biden’s top economic priority is to combat inflation by lowering the costs that working families face while also reducing the federal deficit. Additive Manufacturing, for example, can be used to gain a significant competitive advantage for manufacturers by significantly reducing material costs, lead times, and waste when compared to traditional manufacturing processes such as forging.

President Biden has designated five American manufacturers to oversee the adoption of new additive manufacturing activities by small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) suppliers. GE Aviation, Raytheon, Siemens Energy, Lockheed Martin and Honeywell are the five companies. AM Forward will be supported by the non-profit Applied Science & Technology Research Organization (ASTRO).

Sciaky’s EBAM technology is a wire-based directed energy deposition (DED) process for metal 3D printing. Titanium, tantalum, tungsten, Inconel, niobium, nickel-copper/copper-nickel, aluminium, molybdenum, zircalloy, and stainless steel are all available as wire feedstock. In many cases, wire feedstock is 50% (or more) less expensive than powder feedstock. Furthermore, wire feedstock is less dangerous and easier to store than powder feedstock (the powder used in titanium is known to be highly flammable).

EBAM technology assisted manufacturing behemoth Lockheed Martin in lowering production costs for titanium propellant tanks for space satellites. Lockheed Martin reported post-project analysis savings of 80% on lead times, 55% on material costs, and 75% on material waste. Furthermore, the 3D printed propellant tanks passed the stringent performance tests required for production.

“Sciaky is preparing plans to meet the needs of SME suppliers participating in the AM Forward program. We will offer world-class EBAM equipment, training programs and technical support.”

Sciaky’s EBAM systems can produce parts up to 19 feet (5.79 metres) in length, making them the most widely scalable metal additive manufacturing solution in the industry (in terms of work envelope). With gross deposition rates of up to 40 lbs. (18.14 kg) of metal per hour, EBAM is also the fastest deposition process in the metal additive manufacturing market.

The Interlayer Real-time Imaging and Sensing System (IRISS®) is the only real-time adaptive control system in the metal 3D printing market that can sense and digitally self-adjust metal deposition with precision and repeatability. Sciaky’s EBAM 3D printing process is distinguished by its innovative closed-loop control, which ensures consistent part geometry, mechanical properties, microstructure, and metal chemistry from the first to the last part.

Sciaky will be in booth 1427 at the RAPID + TCT Event in Detroit from May 17 to 19, 2022. The event will feature some of the most recent advances in additive manufacturing.
